What if timeless architecture is bad design?

What if timeless architecture is bad design?

It sounds like a contradiction, but it’s a question worth asking.

“Timeless” has become one of architecture’s highest compliments. Yet in trying to avoid looking dated, we sometimes remove the very qualities that give a building its identity, character, and connection to its time.

The buildings we admire most today didn’t become timeless because they tried to be. They became timeless because they responded exceptionally well to their context, their technology, and the people they were designed for.

Perhaps timelessness is not the goal.

Perhaps it is the outcome of architecture that is honest, purposeful, and meaningful enough to remain relevant long after it was built.

Maybe the real ambition isn’t to design something that escapes time.

It’s to design something that time chooses to keep.
